Reflections: Deep Roots

Dear Friend,
Have you ever noticed how the most ordinary moments can awaken the sweetest memories?
A few weeks ago, my daughter shared several plant clippings with me. I placed them in simple glass jars along the windowsill of my sewing room, where they catch the morning light.
Now, almost every day when I walk into the studio, I find myself stopping to check on them. I peer through the glass, looking for the tiniest hint of a new root. And every time, I think of my momma.
Momma has always loved sharing plants with family and friends. She and her sisters were known to carry garden clippers in the car, just in case they spotted something beautiful along the way. If they did, they weren't afraid to knock on a stranger's door and ask if they might have a little clipping.
To this day, they still enjoy receiving and giving cuttings.
I smile just thinking about it.
Years later, nearly every plant in Momma's yard has a story behind it. This one came from a friend. That one from a sister. Another began as a tiny clipping from someone's garden and, with a little patience and care, became something beautiful of her own.
Perhaps that's why these little jars on my windowsill mean so much to me...
Now, I am the momma receiving clippings from my sweet daughter.
Right now, there really isn't much to see.
No blossoms.
No dramatic growth.
Nothing that would make anyone stop and say, Look at that!

But beneath the water, something is happening.
Tiny roots are beginning to appear.
Quietly.
Slowly.
Almost unnoticed.
And lately, I've been thinking about how much life can be like that.
We often want to see the blossoms, don't we?
We want to know we're growing, moving forward, becoming something new.
We want some visible sign that the waiting, tending, and trusting are accomplishing something.
But perhaps some of the most important work happens where no one else can see it.
Beneath the surface. Patience grows a little deeper. Faith becomes a little stronger. Gratitude takes hold in places where worry once lived.
There may be seasons when we wonder if anything is happening at all. And yet, just like those little clippings on my windowsill, perhaps we are not standing still.
Perhaps we are growing roots.
Roots that will steady us.
Roots that will nourish whatever comes next.
Roots that are preparing us to bloom when the season is right.
So if you find yourself in a quieter season right now, one where there isn't much visible growth to celebrate,
I hope you'll give yourself permission not to rush it.
Keep tending what God has placed before you.
Keep looking for the tiny signs of grace.
Maybe this season isn't about blooming just yet.
Maybe it's about putting down deep roots.
And perhaps that is beautiful too.
A Quiet Stitch
Deep Roots Begin with Accurate Cutting
Just as deep roots support healthy plants, strong quilting habits support beautiful quilts.

Every treasured quilt begins long before the first seam is sewn. It begins at the cutting mat.
When pieces are cut carefully, everything that follows becomes easier. Corners match. Seams nest. Blocks finish the correct size. Those few extra moments at the cutting mat support every stitch that follows.
It's a little like the tiny roots growing beneath my plant clippings.
We hardly notice them, yet they're doing the important work that allows something beautiful to grow.

Quiet Tip: Strong quilts begin with a little preparation. Take a moment to press your fabric, trim one fresh, straight edge, and line up your ruler carefully before making that first cut. A sharp rotary blade and the simple habit of measuring twice and cutting once can save hours of frustration later.
Just like healthy roots support a flourishing plant, these little habits become the strong foundation beneath every keepsake quilt.
Around the Studio

Back-to-school days have passed, and while Florida may not have gotten the message just yet, I'm already dreaming of autumn in the studio.
This month, we're welcoming the season with a beautiful beginner-friendly fall quilt. With just a few yards of fabric and a few simple steps, it's designed to be completed in about a month.
Just imagine it finished and ready for those first cooler evenings... draped across your favorite chair, waiting for a good book and a cup of something warm.
And when the holidays arrive, you'll have a beautiful handmade touch of fall welcoming family and friends into your home.
From My Kitchen

There is something about a jar of homemade granola sitting on the kitchen counter that feels like a quiet life to me.
Maybe it's because something so simple can be made slowly, shared generously, and enjoyed around the table with people we love.
Recently, I made a batch with friends. We filled it with oats, pecans, cashews, almonds, seeds, coconut, and bits of dried fruit, and somehow all those different ingredients came together into something pretty wonderful.
I've decided this recipe is simply too good to keep to myself.
So this month, I'm sharing it with you.
My homemade granola recipe is yours to download and enjoy!
Make a batch for your own kitchen, fill a pretty jar for someone you love, or invite a friend over and share it together.
If you are filling a jar, make your gift extra special with my gifting cards. A one-time purchase that you can print repeatedly on any standard-size letter paper.
Before We Part
Whether you're growing something new, learning a new skill, making something with your hands, or simply filling a jar with something good to share, I hope you'll find a little joy in the ordinary moments this month.
May September remind you that the most meaningful growth often happens where no one else can see it.
May your hands find joy in creating, your heart find peace in the ordinary moments, and your home become a place where beauty quietly takes root.
Until next time...
With gratitude,
