Reflections of a Quiet Life

Dear Friend,
Welcome.
It feels good to finally write these words. Many of you know that my husband and I spent this summer moving into a new home. While settling into our new space was certainly first on my list, I have to admit it was my new sewing studio that I was most excited to unpack. I had already planned where my machine would go, designs sketched for fabric storage, notion drawers to organize, and more spools of thread than places to store them.
The moving company estimated our entire household would fill about 75 boxes. Either we are inefficient packers, or they hadn't counted the quilting room...which claimed well over 100 boxes all by itself!
The movers arrived on Sunday, breaking down the furniture from one house and setting it up in the other. When they left, boxes were stacked throughout each room and I was eager to begin unpacking after a night’s sleep. By Tuesday, I had developed a cough and aching muscles. I blamed the dust stirred up from moving and the soreness on lifting one too many boxes. It wasn't until the next day, when the fever arrived, that I realized I wasn't simply exhausted from moving.

I was sick.
There I was, just a few days into a new home, spending my days moving from the bed...to the couch...and back to bed again, waiting for enough strength to return so I could begin unpacking again. If I'm honest, I was frustrated. This wasn’t part of my plan. There were boxes waiting to be opened, pictures waiting to be hung, and a sewing room waiting to come to life. But illness has a way of slowing us down whether we welcome it or not. As the days passed, I began noticing the view from each place where I rested.
One evening, just before sunset, several deer quietly wandered through the backyard.
Early one morning, a pair of wood ducks skimmed low across the pond, searching for a place to land.
Each day I watched the oversized creamy-white blossoms on my neighbor's young magnolia tree slowly unfold. I found myself quietly waiting for my own young magnolia to bloom.

A black racer made regular visits across our back porch, reminding me I wasn't the first one to call this place home.
And tucked in the corner of the downstairs bathroom, I discovered a rather portly little gecko who had undoubtedly settled here long before we ever arrived. I believe he had faithfully appointed himself to pest-control duty.
Little by little, my frustration gave way to gratitude. The boxes could wait. The pictures would eventually find their place. The sewing room wasn't going anywhere. As life grew quieter, I noticed my heart settling too. Somewhere between the fever breaking and the boxes patiently waiting, I realized something.
Home wasn't waiting for every cabinet to be organized or every room to be finished. It had already found me. Even before the last box was ever unpacked… I was home.
Thank you for spending these quiet moments with me.
My hope is that each month we'll meet here again, just as friends would over a cup of coffee.
There is always something taking shape here at Quiet Life, and I'd love to share a little of it with you. This month, let me show you what has been happening around the studio...
Around the Studio
The sewing room is slowly coming together, and each day it feels a little more like home.

The blue fabrics have been unboxed and claimed their places on the shelves
...and nestled among them, Little Quilt Bear has found his favorite perch. For more than twenty years, he has quietly watched over my sewing room. A precious gift from my sweet niece, he somehow always finds his way to my fabric shelves.
I suppose every studio needs a faithful little companion.
With the shelves filling once again, inspiration is beginning to settle in too. This little studio is where many of the ideas begin, long before they find their way into the classrooms where we create together.
One of those ideas has been quietly growing for many months, and I'm delighted to finally share it with you.
Something Special is Taking Shape.
Something special has been quietly taking shape here at Quiet Life Quilts & Crafts…
Introducing our brand-new Heirloom Blocks series, part of our Block Party classes.
Each month we'll gather around the sewing table to create a beautiful featured block using timeless quilting techniques.
Whether you join us for just one class and create a stunning stand-alone block, or return month after month to build an heirloom sampler quilt, each block is designed to be treasured for years to come.
Every Heirloom Block finishes at either 4 inches, 8 inches, or 16 inches, making it easy to mix and match blocks from the series into a quilt that's uniquely your own.
August Featured Blocks: Welcome Home & Homeward
Inspired by the joy of creating a warm and welcoming home, Welcome Home and Homeward are the first blocks in what I hope will become a treasured collection of heirloom designs. I would love for you to pull up a chair, stitch alongside us, and become part of the story.
Our first Heirloom Block, Welcome Home (sister block to Homeward), is a generous 16" x 16" block that comes together quickly while showcasing several traditional quilting techniques, including flying geese, snowballed corners, an on-point center square, and nested patchwork. As the pieces come together, stars, flowers, chains, and other beautiful secondary designs begin to emerge. This block is perfect for the confident quilter.
